Why We Love It: Owner and chief-in-charge ice cream maker Michael Southall opened Ice Cream 504 as a stall in the French Market in 2011, but he credits hot summer Sundays on his Aunt Ruby’s porch in Napoleonville, Louisiana, for the inspiration. Southall opened this Freret Street location in 2014, and makes small-batch ice cream the old-fashioned way: in a classic churn, with no preservatives or gum thickener. The shop sells 16 ice creams and sorbets, many seasonal, including chocolate, peppermint and butter pecan.
