It isn’t easy to choose or even identify the healthy menu item in many restaurants in this delicious and decadent city. You sit down and open your menu with the best intentions, but inevitably choose the over-the-top-and-you-should-only-eat-it-once-in-a-while dish—almost every time you are out. And let’s be honest: Living in New Orleans means eating out a lot.

Want to know what the healthiest choice is? Just look for the Ochsner Health System Approved gold seal. Molly Kimball, a registered dietician with Ochsner’s Elmwood Fitness Center, collaborates with local restaurants to identify the better-for-you items on the menu. All approved items must meet a specific set of criteria: Entrées must contain less than 600 calories and 800 mg of sodium; the dish cannot contain any white, refined starches. The full set of criteria, as well as list of participating restaurants, tips and nutritious recipes like Smoked Salmon Benedict from the Ruby Slipper and Creole Cream Cheese Parfait from Tableau (yes, we said nutritious) can be found on the Ochsner website.
